Using the Bible in Recovery from Addiction
God Can Remove Negative Feelings
No one becomes an addict by choice. Most people who become addicted to drugs and alcohol are using the drugs alcohol as a way to cover up negative feelings, such as low self esteem. These negative feelings may have deeper roots, such as abuse. While you may think all of these feelings are the bottom of the barrel that is far from the truth.
There are times when God allows His children to go through rough times to break them down so that he can build them back up. Psalm 51:17 states “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” God doesn’t hate you for your past mistakes, and He doesn’t hate you because of the way you feel. The only thing God wants you to do is to trust in Him and trust that He is going to take care of you. When you accept God’s love, forgiveness and support, all of the old wounds that are causing the negative feelings can begin to heal.
Faith Can Break the Devil’s Stronghold on Your Life
As you work toward your goal of sobriety, the devil is going to try to step in and stop that progress. You have to rebuke him to stop him. Once you stop him, he can’t control you, and he can’t continue to lead you from one fix to another.
Even Jesus had to rebuke the devil. In Matthew 4:10 lets Christians know what to say to the devil to rebuke him. It says “Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” Addiction is from the devil and negative thoughts toward those with addictions are from the devil.
The devil knows that unless he does something to thwart your success that you will be one of God’s chosen people in the end of days. The devil wants as many souls as possible to loss in a horrifying abyss with him. To avoid this, you must call on the name of the Lord to help you out and to save you from your troubles. Joel 2:32 exclaims “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, among the survivors whom the Lord calls.” God wants to deliver you from the depths of your addiction.
God Provides the Holy Spirit as a Comforter and Guide
God doesn’t expect you to overcome your addiction on your own. He doesn’t even expect you to overcome your addiction with only the help of humans. Because you are God’s child, he sent His Holy Spirit to help you break the hold your addiction has on you. John 14:16-17 lets us know that Jesus is the one who asked his Father to send a helper to His chosen people. The verses say “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”
The Holy Spirit is a gift that God gives you to provide comfort when you feel all alone. The Holy Spirit speaks to your soul to let you know what is in line with God’s will and what is nothing more than the devil’s trickery. Once you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are given the gift of the Holy Spirit. Let the Holy Spirit take away the hurt of your past life. You don’t need to worry about what happened in the past, you only to focus on doing God’s will today.
Once you accept the Bible’s help for the underlying problems that are causing your addiction, you can move forward and live life as one of God’s chosen lights to lead other people to begin living a life that glorifies
